HORSE & LIVESTOCK PROTECTION

Since man first domesticated animals he has been locked in a battle with biting insects that spread disease and misery to his livestock.

All horse owners will be familiar with Sweet Itch – a condition brought about by an allergic reaction to the saliva of biting midges, sandflies and blackflies. Sweet Itch or Summer Seasonal Recurrent Dermatitis is, as its name suggests, a seasonal complaint that occurs and reoccurs when vector species (flying biting insects) are most active, usually between the months of April and early November. They are particularly problematic on calm, humid days – biting mostly in the early morning and late afternoon.

Approximately 5% of the UK equine population is affected by Sweet Itch which is essentially a failing of the animal’s immune response to the insect bite.  Many good husbandry, topical and physical responses and treatments are adopted but, the condition symptoms remain notoriously difficult to treat and thus significant suffering occurs.

Midge Guard’s anti-midge machine, the Mosquito Magnet is the original world leading proven solution for controlling blood meal biting insects. The traps convert propane gas into CO2 using a precise catalytic process with exactly the right heat and moisture content. Combined with a naturally occurring pheromone called octenol, biting insects are attracted to the machine where by means of the Mosquito Magnets patented counter-flow technology they are vacuumed into a net, where they dehydrate and die.

Midge Guard has forged links Dr Alison Blackwell, Director of Advanced Pest Solutions. She is recognised as one of the country’s foremost experts in midge management and her organisations’ expertise ranges from initial risk assessment, through to the development, implementation and monitoring of a tailored management plan, which will often incorporate innovative solutions together with up to the minute technologies.

APS has also developed predictive modelling of pest populations by means of field monitoring and analysis of climatic conditions using their own weather stations and weather forecast data. Since 2006, Advanced Pest Solutions has produced the Scottish Midge Forecast www.midgeforecast.co.uk a service giving a 10 day predictive level of ‘midge risk’ across Scotland.
