CONSULTANCY
Midge Guard Limited is situated in the Lake District at the southern end of Lake Windermere. We partner with Advanced Pest Solutions Limited (APS), based in Edinburgh and Midge Free Zone (MFZ), in Helensburgh, Scotland, to bring modern technological solutions to the problem(s) of flying, biting insects.
Our partner organisation Advanced Pest Solutions, has particular experience of developing midge management programmes.
APS company Director and founder, Dr Alison Blackwell, is the author of numerous papers and book chapters on midge biology, and is a recognised expert in her field. She and her team are responsible for generating the ever popular Midge Forecast for Scotland.
Midge Free Zone provide us with the hardware designed to significantly reduce midge numbers. By combining forces Midge Guard and Advanced Pest Solutions can help their clients gain a clear understanding of the nature of their midge problem, identify the risk factors and develop solutions to improve the living and working conditions of the people and animals who are exposed to the midges whilst living and working outdoors.

With over 20 years of active research in this area, Advanced Pest Solutions' deep and inherent knowledge of midge biology and ecology gives the company a unique expertise that enables them to offer initial risk assessment, development, implementation and monitoring of a tailored management plan, very often incorporating innovative solutions with up to the minute preventative technologies.
No other organization understands this highly successful insect more fully than APS.
Alison and her team have comprehensive experience of sampling and monitoring pest insect populations, and work with several local authorities, leisure groups and private organisations who rely upon their years of exhaustive field studies to provide a key to midge and insect management problems.
APS has developed predictive modelling of pest populations by means of field monitoring and analysis of climatic conditions using their own weather stations and weather forecast data.
Consequently, since 2006, Advanced Pest Solutions has produced the Scottish Midge Forecast www.midgeforecast.co.uk a service giving a 10 day predictive level of ‘midge risk’ across Scotland.
As well as providing information for visitors to Scotland the midge forecast can be used to co-ordinate midge protection for high-value animals. APS currently leads a Scottish Government-funded bluetongue virus surveillance project in Scotland.
The accurate forecasting and cost-effective targeting of pest populations lead The Carrick; a £50M golf and leisure resort on Loch Lomond, to commission a midge map from APS, identifying insect “hot spots” leading to the implementation and management of a 30+ midge trap solution.
In 2007 APS worked with the organizers of both the ‘Connect’ and ‘Outsider’ music festivals to ensure that their guests were midge-free.
Programmes of this nature significantly increase business because outside facilities can be used to their fullest extent. So, whether it is the protection of bloodstock animals or the enjoyment of outdoor events; festivals, hotels, golf courses, pubs or restaurants, come and talk to us, it could be more profitable than you think!
